Finding The Olympian Inside:
Why the best never stop learning

"I am really excited to be sharing some new and innovative ideas at this year's winter presentations. Some of the tips I'll be sharing have been making a big difference to the riders I've been working with. There is still a long way to go before the principles of accelerated learning are applied as universally as sports like cycling, so hopefully this will encourage riders of all levels to come along and get ahead of the game!"

About the Presentation

If Charlotte Dujardin has taught us anything at the London Olympics it is that "being expert" is not simply about experience, but how we use our experience. The latent ability in all of us is staggering. Evidence would suggest that we are all capable of high performance as riders – yet for reasons grounded in our habits and our mental approach to getting best out of ourselves, we can limit our own success.

Using lessons from Team GB's most successful sports Charlie explains why the legacy you will leave behind as a rider may be determined less by “time in the saddle” and more by how you use that time. With important implications for all riders and coaches, Charlie explains how he has applied these principles with Novice to Olympic riders in 2012.  During the evening you will find out more about…

- The fundamental principles of learning faster
- Tips for applying these principles every time we ride
- Building a mental “blueprint” for our performance
- Why less is sometimes more for advanced riders
- How to embed the memories that are good for us
- Using challenge as a vehicle for improvement – not a source of pressure

"I had the pleasure of listening to Charlie during a British Eventing Coaching Day.  I found his presentation fascinating and stimulating.  He had a very practical approach, and I learnt a great deal.  I think Charlie's message is very useful for both riders and coaches and should help them to develop themselves.  It will certainly help both riders and coaches to perform under pressure."
Yogi Breisner, TeamGB Performance Manager

“Charlie is a highly engaging and inspiring speaker who demonstrates psychology in a colourful way that relates to riders of every level and age. A ‘must see’ for the winter!”
Alex Peternell, Olympic Event Rider

“Since working with Charlie I now recognise how many factors influence our mental state as riders. This has changed my approach to competition and taking control of my own performance, not just the horse’s, has played a big part in improving my results.”
Sharon Hunt, Olympic Bronze Medallist

"Thank you Charlie! I really enjoyed your presentation and your ideas have been a revelation.”

“For me, performance psychology is about helping riders perform as consistently in competition as they do in training – with freedom to do what they know they are capable of. This typically requires strategies that enable us to have belief in our potential, create and execute a clear game plan and think clearly under pressure.”

Charlie Unwin, Performance Psychology Coach

As a performance psychologist Charlie has built a reputation for his specialist experience in helping equestrians perform more consistently in competition and thrive under pressure. In 2012 alone Charlie has worked together with Grand Prix dressage riders, Olympic and 4 star eventers as well as the Junior and Young Rider Event Teams.

Why not come along to one of the many clinics and presentations that Charlie offers throughout the year. Alternatively you can arrange private workshops or 1:1 training to tailor your needs.

"I started working with Charlie because I really needed help with the confidence issues I had been experiencing with my riding - especially in competition. The work we did really helped me take control of my performance which I am pleased to say had a dramatic impact on my results."

Dear Charlie,

I am just writing to thank you so much for all your help.

Squirrel is jumping brilliantly and at Novice and 1* has been 4th, 4th and 6th this season, with consistent double clears (we had a stop SJ at his first event). We went to Hambleden 1* at the weekend and I don't know if you saw the downpour on Saturday morning but we were show jumping in it on top of hard ground....very slippery!!

He was warming up over some pretty small fences and just slid into one and had to stop and then scared himself, so stopped again. Mum was shouting at me to withdraw, I couldn't hold the reins as they were so wet, etc...but I was able to just stay focussed and he went in and jumped an immaculate clear in torrential rain! I would never have been able to do that before but somehow I just didn't panic or let anything get to me and he was great!

Off to Pontispool for intermediate next time, so fingers crossed!
Thank you so much!

Dear Charlie,

Just a quick email to say thank you so much for the talk you gave to us last Wednesday at Carlton. I found it really interesting and certainly took a lot away with me, a large proportion of which I managed to put in to practice this weekend at a competition with one of my horses, we managed to score a personal best with the showjumping and get a top 5 placing!

Thank you once again for giving us so much to think about and making all seem so achievable.

"I thoroughly enjoyed the day, I found his presentation both inspiring and motivational, and look forward to putting his advice and techniques into practice.
Thank you

Hi Charlie
I attended your seminar at Moulton last week.  I thought I was a bit too 'stuck in my ways' to change but I tried really hard to put some of things you suggested into action and I had my best result for a long time at an event last weekend and I managed to stay cool and not let my emotional brain take over from my logical brain.  I hope it lasts and I can build on this result
Thanks again

'I met Charlie in 2010 having been recommended to him by John Bowen. At the time I was going through a real meltdown with my confidence. I am an experienced dressage rider and when I first used to go out to shows I had no expectations, I was therefore reasonably confident. After having a few successes I found that quite a few people became interested in what I was doing, this made me very self concious and instead of concentrating on riding I would find myself concentrating on what these people thought of me and my horse. I then started to become very nervous - never of the horse - but of what the people who were watching and the judges thought.

Charlie really helped me to regain an appropriate focus, taking my mind off of outside influences and onto simple performance with the horses. I still keep in touch with Charlie and I try to meet up with him before a big show to help keep my focus. I am thoroughly enjoying competition now and this has been reflecting in my marks. I can honestly say that I don't even think about who is watching me these days when I am riding which is delightful!' .....

Hi Charlie,

Alex enjoyed her day with you very much and took copious notes.  I would have liked to be there myself, but I had to work.  Alex went eventing the next day and exceeded her personal best in dressage with a 28 (she is sure the techniques you recommended helped), followed by a double clear. She went a bit fast cross country, but as the mare is going up a level that was fine for us.  Do keep us in touch with anything you are doing.

Best wishes,
Diana Hogg

Dear Charlie,

Just wanted to drop you a quick email to say how much I enjoyed the session last night in Bicester.
It was very thought provoking and found the monitor assessment really interesting... I left with a sense of hope!

All the best

"I competed in the Equestrian national finals for BUCS (British universities and college sport). I have been placed in the top 5 in previous years, but this year I used some of the techniques and skills that I got from your workshop and demo, which I feel hugely contributed to me winning the showjumping championships against all the other top university riders in the country (including young riders who compete for Britain!)"
Vanessa Miranda

Hi Charlie

I came on the course at Hartpury and put what I learnt into practice at our first event on Saturday.  It must have worked because got a decent dressage score and a double clear – I actually enjoyed the cross country which was my great challenge!

Thank you very much for your help.
Kate Ive, Eventer

"Thanks for last week, found it really useful, even though a lot to take in!  If I can apply just half I think it will make a real difference and have already found that I'm being much more positive about things in general. Setting goals for each training session has really helped focus the mind and the horses seem to be responding quicker to acheive the aim for that session and I'm also finding that as a result, I make corrections to other things as they happen without thinking about it!"
Samantha Gray

"Thanks for an excellent workshop. It is a completely new way of thinking for me but it makes so much sense and I can really see how it is going to help in all aspects of competition, and for that matter, in so many other aspects of life!"

Just wanted to say the workshop was really helpful, thanks. Clear rounds in competition since workshop - 2 out of 2!! Clear rounds before then..umm...let me think..too few to mention!

"I did one of your workshops with a group of Riding Club members last month & did my first competition of the season at Easter weekend. Although only low key riding club level, it was a big thing for me taking my 5 yr old who has not been the easiest to bring on.
We completed two dressage tests & a S-J class which was my first one on him. We won the class & I put it down to the benefits of the workshop & putting into practise what I learnt that day. Thank you."

"Following your workshop I went away with the aim of implementing it at our club camp. The flatwork we did was probably some of the best we have ever done, relaxed and soft from both of us and beginning to find advanced moves (for us) a lot easier. Cross Country was amazing and we were jumping really cleanly!!  Show-jumping, sometimes the hardest of the three for me to relax and not rush, but after thinking about the work we did I managed to let the horse get on with the job and jumped beautifully. The really positive thing with this was it was crystal clear to me what to do to correct the situation.
We both had a ball. Please could we fix a date for a second workshop!"
