"Our crew & club have had the most successful Henley Royal Regatta in 25 years due in no small part to the work we did with Charlie. I would not hesitate to enlist Charlie's expertise again and recommend him to anyone, with the definite exception of any of our competitors!"

Nick Woodbridge - Swimmer

“For me, performance psychology is about helping athletes perform consistently at their best under the pressure of competition. This typically requires strategies that enable us to have belief in our potential, create and execute clear game plans and focus effectively under pressure.

In addition to this we must remember that individuals perform largely as a function of their environment making it important to work closely with coaches, performance staff, parents and governing bodies”
Charlie Unwin
(more about Charlie)

Charlie combines his passion for psychology with applied experience in pressure environments, including the military and elite sport. Charlie has built a reputation as a specialist in helping athletes and teams convert their performance in training into consistent performance under the pressure of competition.

Here are just some examples of the work Charlie has done...

Great Britain Skeleton Team | Lead Performance Psychology Consultant

Charlie is currently working with the GB Skeleton Team in the run-up to the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. Having won medals at the previous three Olympic Games, British Skeleton have developed a reputation for performance excellence which was further reinforced by Amy Williams winning Gold in Vancouver.

Charlie works with both athletes and performance staff. His role has been two-fold; 1. Integrating the principles of performance psychology into day-to-day training and competition (i.e. coach-athlete feedback, decision making strategies, performance analysis, building race strategies) 2. Working with all the performance staff and athletes to co-create and develop a performance environment that nurtures teamwork and individual responsibilty.

Great Britain Fencing Team | Performance Psychology Consultant

Charlie worked with the GB Fencing Team in 2010-2011, in particular epee and foil weapons. Charlie was responsible for applying principles of performance psychology to training and competition environments. In a highly physical and tactical combat sport the fencer must have a strong self-identity in order that they can be resolute in their decision-making and creative under pressure. One of the key objectives for Charlie as a performance psychologist was to enable performance in training to be transfered successfuly into the intense arena of World Class competition.

Junior European Champions 2012

Great Britain Equestrian | Performance Psychology Consultant

Charlie is the performance psychologist for both the Junior and Young Rider GB Event Teams having also worked with numerous Olympic equestrians. Charlie works with riders and their support networks to deal effectively with the specific and varied demands of this multi-disciplined sport. The dressage discipline requires riders to be calm and focused whilst the show-jumping discipline demands technical confidence and the cross country course a strong nerve and presence of mind. Add to this the unique dynamic of an animal and human partnership, riders must demonstrate the qualities of a strong leader under pressure in order to perform successfully in combination with the horse. Given the unique challenges this presents in developing a rider's expertise, Charlie also works closely with coaches and parents.
In 2012 the Junior GB Team were both individual & team gold medalists at the European Championships.

Whitgift Rugby, National Champions 2009 & 2012 |
Performance Psychology Consultant

Charlie was provided with the unique opportunity of working with the Whitgift School rugby team in 2009 and 2010. These were two very special seasons for the team - winning the prestigous National Daily Mail Cup over both seasons with the finals held at Twickenham. Charlie provided a number of sessions in the early part of both seasons, focusing the team on shared responsibility and sustaining high performance over the season. The team were extremely engaged with the programme and, alongside the coach, co-created many of the performance principles that they wanted to play by. The results speak for themselves.

Great Britain Modern Pentathlon | Performance Psychology Consultant

A former athlete on the GB Modern Pentathlon squad himself, Charlie has worked with many of the individuals that make up an organisation who have won medals at every Olympics since Sydney 2000. In 2008, major changes to the sport saw the target shooting and running events combined to create an event that required athletes to shoot under extreme physical duress. Charlie undertook specific research with the team exploring the combined effects of mental anxiety and physical arousal on shooting performance. He used his research to help advise atheletes and coaches on how to train physcial and mental control, not only in training but also in competition.
Congratulations to Sam Murray who won Olympic Gold in London after her phenominal run/shoot.

Vesta Rowing Club, Henley Finalists 2009 |
Performance Psychology Consultant

Charlie worked with Vesta Rowing Club's Mens Coxed Four in the build up to the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in 2009. Charlie's remit was to focus on the application of mental strategies that would enable each individual and the team as a whole to maximise the their physical ability. This started with psychological contracting exercises that clarified team goals and strengthened the crew's commitment, responsibility and trust towards one another. This developed into a programme of combined mental & physical training designed to achieve specific mind states associated with race day, using music, imagery and physical cues to strengthen these states. Having entered the Henley Royal Regatta as complete under-dogs, the crew progressed all the way to the final where they were beaten narrowly by the tournament favourites. This was the clubs best result in over 20 years.

"After attending a presentation of Charlie's which I really enjoyed he came to see me in order to discuss psychology in more detail. I found the work we did fascinating and now see important patterns surrounding my very successful years. I really recommend Charlie to anyone who is interested in using a psychologist as I have found it fascinating and wouldn't have been convinced a few weeks ago, so just watch and see what happens next year, I think it's going to be a good one."
Sharon Hunt
British Eventing Team, Bronze Medallists Beijing 2008

"I started working with Charlie because I really needed help with the confidence issues I had been experiencing with my riding - especially in competition. The work we did really helped me take control of my performance which I am pleased to say had a dramatic impact on my results."
Lucy Ferguson
Junior World Championship Team Silver Medalist
GB Modern Pentathlon

"Charlie Unwin began working with us six weeks before our run to the final of Henley Royal Regatta and played a significant part in our success. Our crew benefited greatly from the relaxation and visualisation techniques Charlie introduced us to. Charlie went out of his way to understand us as individuals and as a group and to understand the skills and demands of rowing. His programme was tailored specifically to meet our needs and his sessions were always innovative, challenging and fun."
Nicholas Neving
Vesta Rowing Club, Henley Finalists

"We sought Charlie's help to prepare us for the biggest event of our annual racing calendar, Henley Royal Regatta. In the short six week period prior to the Regatta, Charlie worked on a number of different visualisation and relaxation exercises with us which helped develop an extremely strong bond between the crew and which gave us invaluable techniques to use in our training and racing. We ended up having the most successful Henley that our club has had in some twenty-five years and whilst there were many contributing factors to this success, it was due in no small part to the added-edge which the work with Charlie gave us. I would not hesitate to enlist Charlie's expertise again in the future and would be pleased to recommend him to anyone, with the definite exception of any of our competitors!"
